Applications are invited for the post of Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer in East Asian History at the University of Manchester. Candidates specialising in any area of East Asian history, including South East Asia, and especially in Chinese history, of the nineteenth and twentieth century are encouraged to apply. We are interested in applications from those with a proven track record in innovative and inclusive teaching, learning and assessment. The successful candidate will teach in a range of established undergraduate courses in modern East Asian history catering to an area of student demand in the department, offer a research led final year module, develop new curricular provision at the postgraduate level and supervise independent projects and dissertations.

Teaching and Scholarship post holders at the University of Manchester have the same opportunities for career progression and promotion as those on Teaching and Research contracts, based on clear criteria appropriate to their T&S responsibilities, such as advancing of high quality pedagogical research, intensive work around the development of teaching in some form, or published research and/or scholarship in their field to enhance the quality of our teaching and student experience. The post holder will not be expected to contribute to the Department’s next REF submission. They will, however, be eligible for academic leave, which will offer an opportunity for professional development.

World history at Manchester is a particular strength of the History Department, and is distinguished for its engagement with the city’s cultural collections, which offer an incredibly rich teaching and research resource. We have outstanding East Asia collections at the John Rylands Library, Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester Museum and the Manchester Central Library, including Ming-Qing dynasty rare books, prints and the UK’s first complete set of the copper engravings of the Qianlong Emperor’s European palaces in Yuan Ming Yuan. Our East Asian historians have a strong international profile and record of participation in impact activities relating to world affairs and prominent exhibitions. Their published work has won prestigious prizes and their research continues to attract major RC funding awards.
