The Department of Pharmacology is a dynamic, world leading teaching and research department in pharmacology. The department houses around 220 researchers, postgraduate students and support staff, and has excellent facilities. This is an exciting time to join the Department during a period of significant growth.
The Head of Administration and Finance (HAF) plays a key role in the management and direction of the Department. Working closely with the Head of Department and the senior management team, including Finance, HR, IT, Academic Administration, Facilities and Safety, the successful candidate will help to determine departmental strategy, taking responsibility for implementation of strategy and undertaking major departmental projects.
Supported by the Medical Sciences Division, the HAF is responsible for overseeing departmental expenditure as well as financial management of the Department’s substantial portfolio of externally funded research projects. The post-holder will be proactive and innovative in the development of the plans to support the long-term sustainability of the operations of the Department, physical and financial asset management, capital planning and prioritisation, and business plan development. This role offers an excellent opportunity for you to demonstrate your strong business and managerial ability along with the ability to balance the needs and requirements of multiple stakeholders at all levels.
The successful candidate needs to have high personal integrity and is required to take a high level of personal responsibility for both their own work and that of the team members working within their remit. They must have sound judgement, be able to think laterally and creatively and have the intellectual capacity and strength of character to take and implement important, complex and difficult decisions. Extensive operational and financial management skills and experience are critical to this role, alongside the ability to work to tight deadlines. You will have excellent organisational skills with the ability to organise and delegate appropriately. Strong project management skills are key, with the ability to make sound judgements using information from multiple sources. Communication with people at all levels and backgrounds is essential, liaising both internally and externally with key stakeholders. Experience of preparing budgets and financial reports and implementing financial controls is essential. Educationally, you will ideally have a degree or equivalent ability in knowledge, intellectual capacity, reasoning and analytical skills.
