The School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh, invites applications for a Senior Researcher on the project “Verification of quantum Technology” which is funded by EPSRC Hub in Quantum Computing and Simulation (EP/T001062/1). This is a multidisciplinary collaborative project involving stakeholders in industry and academy (with 13 partners). The successful candidate will join a team focussed on conducting leading UK research into hardware testing for emerging scalable quantum devices.

The Opportunity:

The post offers an active role in steering this exciting project to a position of international leadership in its field. The successful candidate should have a PhD in Computer Science or Physics, and a strong background and track record on quantum verification to be able to supervise other students in the team, as well as extensive experience driving forward multidisciplinary research projects. The successful candidate will join a team focussed on conducting leading UK research into quantum hardware testing.

Knowledge, skills and experience: 

Essential knowledge, skills and experience are:

  • A PhD in Computer Science or Physics.
  • Experience and evidence of effective independent research work within an interdisciplinary team. More broadly, demonstrated ability to lead, design and complete research projects, to solve problems independently and make original contributions to research.
  • Excellent technical expertise and experience in all relevant areas: complexity theory, noise analysis, models of computing, protocol design, software development.
  • A track record of first-author and collaborative publication in high-quality journals or conferences, including in quantum computing literature.
  • A track record of successfully managing multidisciplinary teams in the context of multi-partner projects.
  • Extensive experience of working with multiple allied partners in research networks.
  • Extensive experience of providing analysis and technical advice to senior managers.
  • Excellence in written and oral communication, analytical, planning, and time management skills.

The following desirable criteria will be evaluated by the level of proficiency. Recruitment will aim at selecting those candidates with the best possible performance in these criteria.

Desirable knowledge, skills and experience are:

  • An established research interest in the quantum verification or machine learning.
