UCL - Health and Medical

Location: London
Salary: £38,308 to £46,155
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 6th February 2023

Job Ref: B02-04503

UCL is one of the top Universities in the world, with superb facilities for biomedical science and its translation to human disease. The Division of Medicine (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/medicine) has several highly successful groups working in the fields of Immunology and Rheumatology.

Dr Elizabeth Rosser is offering an exciting opportunity for a post-doc in the newly formed Rosser group. This post will be based in UCL’s Division of Medicine but will have opportunities to work across departments with collaborators within the UCL GOS ICH through the Centre for Adolescent Rheumatology. More specifically, the candidate will contribute to a large programme of work (funded by the Kennedy Trust for rheumatology research) that aims to test the hypothesis that the availability of gut-derived metabolites drives pathogenic B cell responses in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) using samples from human patients and mouse models of disease. The candidate will lead the following research objectives:

Objective 1: Identify and validate gut-derived metabolites with potential B cell immunomodulatory capacity in JIA.

Objective 2: Investigate whether altering gut-derived metabolite availability in vivo through dietary interventions modulates disease severity and B-cell phenotype in experimental arthritis.

Essential:

  • PhD or equivalent in Immunology or relevant biological subject
  • Experience in Mouse work, PIL holder.
  • Molecular and cell biology (PCR, ELISA, western Blotting)
  • Multi-parameter flow cytometry

Advantageous:

  • Experience in experimental mouse models of autoimmunity
  • Background in B cell immuno-biology
  • Experience in large dataset bioinformatics
  • Experience in gut-immunology/working with the microbiome
  • Experience working with organoids
  • Experience in GC-MS/HPLC
  • Experience working with human blood samples.

The candidate should also be committed to delivery of excellence in research, will be expected to present key findings from the study at national and international research conferences, and to write primary research papers and reviews on this subject.

Dr Elizabeth Rosser is the recent awardee of a Senior Research Fellowship for the Kennedy Trust for Rheumatology Research and is establishing her new group within the UCL Division of Medicine with strong clinical and scientific links with the UCL Great Ormond Street for Institute for Child Health (UCL GOS ICH) through the Centre for Adolescent Rheumatology Versus Arthritis at UCL, Great Ormond Street and UCL hospital (GOSH and UCLH). Dr Rosser is a specialist in B cell immunology and her group will focus on undercovering how signals from the environment – such as from the gut-microbiota and/or diet - condition B cell responses in chronic inflammatory conditions. Conditions of interest include rheumatic diseases of childhood including juvenile idiopathic arthritis and associated uveitis, juvenile-onset SLE and juvenile dermatomyositis.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team working across the Division of Medicine and Institute for Child Health in the Centre for Adolescent Rheumatology. As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, UCL offer many benefits to employees some of which are summarised on https://www.ucl.ac.uk/work-at-ucl/reward-and-benefits.

As London’s Global University, we know diversity fosters creativity and innovation, and we want our community to represent the diversity of the world’s talent. We are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where we all belong.
