The Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and well qualified scholar to teach Islamic Studies, with a primary specialisation either in Qur’anic studies or in pre-modern (i.e., pre-1800) Islamic intellectual history (e.g., rational theology or Arabic philosophy). The Departmental Lecturer will support the provision of teaching of Islamic Studies in the Faculty, providing cover for some of the duties of the Professor of Islamic Studies (Nicolai Sinai) while he is on research leave. 

The Departmental Lecturer will teach undergraduates reading for the degrees of BA in Arabic, BA in European and Middle Eastern Languages, other related degrees with Arabic as a subsidiary language, and Master’s students reading primarily for the degree of MPhil in Islamic Studies and History. Direct teaching time during term will be approximately 10 hours per week in the form of lectures, seminars, and tutorials. A reasonable contribution to academic administration and examining, to be undertaken in consultation with more senior permanent postholders, will also be required. The Departmental Lecturer will also be encouraged to pursue their independent research and publish academic papers as a secondary commitment to their teaching.  

For this role it is essential to have, a doctorate in Islamic Studies or a related discipline, with a specialisation in Qur’anic studies or in pre-modern Islamic theology or philosophy, to be achieved by the start date of the appointment; proven ability to give lectures and classes in the field of Islamic Studies and the ability to teach texts in pre-modern Arabic. Further to this it is desirable for the candidate to have expertise in another language relevant to teaching and research in pre-modern Islamic Studies, including, e.g., Persian, Greek, Syriac, or Ottoman Turkish. 

The post is fixed term for 1 year (12 months)
