Department of Methodology

Research Officer in South Asian Ethnography

Salary from £39,313 to £47,148 with potential to progress to £50,614 pa inclusive of London Allowance

This is a fixed term appointment for 3 years

This full-time position is to work with Dr Eleanor Power in the Department of Methodology on her Leverhulme-funded collaborative project on ‘Reputational poverty traps’ and the reproduction of social inequality in South Asia and the world. Two people will be hired to this position.

This post will involve conducting ethnographic fieldwork in South Asia (the particular location to be determined based on the successful candidate’s experience and expertise, in consultation with Dr. Power). Alongside participant observation and interviews, the research officer will be expected to collect demographic and social network data. These will help set the stage for a series of experimental games to be played with community members, under the direction of another member of the research team. As this implies, a core part of this post will be collaborating with an interdisciplinary team of social scientists working with communities in South Asia and around the world.

The successful candidate will:

  • have successfully completed or be close to completing a PhD in a relevant discipline by the post start date
  • have experience in conducting qualitative fieldwork (for example, interviews or participant observation)
  • have experience of or the ability to learn survey data collection and other structured data collection techniques
  • have a commitment to collaborative, open, interdisciplinary research

We offer an occupational pension scheme, generous annual leave, hybrid working, and excellent training and development opportunities.

We particularly encourage applicants who are members of groups that are under-represented in academia.
