A Research Fellow is sought to join the preclinical MR team at UoL. You will be responsible for implementation and testing of optimised MRI / MRF pulse sequences on a Bruker 7T MR system, for optimisation of the protocol for scanning ex vivo tissue samples, and for co-ordinating the acquisition of microscopy data, including segmentation/labelling of microscopy volumes. This post is funded by a major MRC-funded research project, held by Prof Derek Jones (Cardiff University). The post is initially funded for 18 months.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Working with and in support of Profs Derek Jones (PI) and Jurgen Schneider’s research grant to ensure the project is successfully completed;
  • Responsible for ex vivo multi-scale (MRI & microscopy) imaging of human tissue samples
  • Developing  and optimising bespoke microstructural imaging sequences on a preclinical ultra-high field MR system
  • Determining the experimental approaches and developing the underpinning technology for the research, in collaboration with the research supervisors; 
  • Collating and analysing data; 
  • Maintaining good records and laboratory notebooks of research work carried out; ensuring compliance with HTA
  • Routinely meeting with the Principal Investigator and other members of the project to discuss progress; 
  • Generating and pursuing original research ideas in the appropriate subject area;
  • Developing research objectives and proposals and contributing to setting the direction of the research project and team including, where appropriate preparing proposals for funding in collaboration with colleagues;
  • Evaluating methods and techniques used and results obtained by other researchers and to relate such evaluations appropriately to your own work;
  • Communicating or presenting research results through publication or other recognised forms of output;
  • Preparing papers for publication in leading international journals and independently writing reports in a prompt manner;
  • Working both independently and also as part of a larger team of researchers, engaging in knowledge-transfer activities where appropriate and feasible;
  • Maintaining your own continuing professional development and acting as a mentor to less experienced colleagues as appropriate;
  • Contributing to the research culture of the School, where appropriate;
  • Contributing to the training of both undergraduate and postgraduate students, where appropriate, including assisting with the supervision of projects in areas relevant to the project.
