Are you interested in working in a world top 100 University? We have an exciting opportunity in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering for someone with a passion for alternative proteins research looking to utilise his/her skills to make an impact on the food industry and the food production system in the UK and beyond.

We are seeking to appoint a skilled and motivated research associate to work in the laboratories of Prof. Tuck Seng Wong and Dr. Kang Lan Tee. You will lead a research project that aims to enhance the protein production of food-grade yeasts for food applications. The position is ideally suited for a candidate interested in translational research and working at the academic-industrial interface.

You will be working in a team of engineers and synthetic biologists to engineer food-grade yeast for food protein production. You will

  • Carry out a plan of research to enhance yeast performance in biomanufacturing settings.
  • Manage and prioritise own workload within agreed objectives to meet the deadline of all milestones of the project.
  • Coordinate and liaise with all members of the team in order to support the achievement of project objectives, ensuring agreed strategy and plans are put into place.
  • Write up results of the research and contribute to the production of research reports and publications, in order to disseminate to a wide readership specifically to include industry.
  • Present results and make recommendations via briefings, presentations and written reports, to facilitate the interpretation of specific issues or problems and to support decision making.
  • Co-supervise student projects related to this project and support post graduate researchers.
  • Any other duties, commensurate with the grade of the post.

This is an exciting opportunity to undertake high-quality, translational research with direct commercial relevance and to be part of a diverse and growing research team. You should have a PhD degree, or equivalent laboratory-based experience relevant to biological engineering or biological sciences. Prior experience with yeast cultivation and yeast genetic engineering techniques would be an advantage. The ability to work as part of a group and independently, and to have excellent organisational, communication and time-management skills are essential.

The research priority of Wong and Tee Research Groups is sustainable biomanufaturing using engineered biological systems (e.g., engineered enzymes, engineered microbial strains). Exemplar projects include future food such as plant-based meat, CO2 capture and utilization, and bioplastic production.
