About the role:
Applicants are invited to apply for a new vacancy at Research Fellow level in Medical Robotics and Image Guided Intervention. The post is based within the Hamlyn Centre at Imperial College London and the appointed applicant will carry out research and teaching at the Centre’s South Kensington and St Mary’s Hospital locations. The Hamlyn Centre is dedicated to developing safe, effective and accessible imaging, sensing and robotics technologies that can reshape the future of healthcare for both developing and developed countries. The Hamlyn Centre is part of the Institute of Global Health Innovation and is supported by two stake-holding departments, Mechanical Engineering, and Surgery & Cancer.
What you would be doing:
The post will support the MRes in Medical Robotics and Image Guided Intervention and you will be expected to play an active role in research project supervision (up to 50% FTE). This will involve projects in robotics as well as imaging and image-guided intervention. In addition, you will be supported by other Hamlyn Centre and Surgery and Cancer academics to develop your own independent research theme within the Centre with the objective of applying for a competitive externally funded research fellowship within one year of appointment.
As an integral part of your role, you will be expected to support high quality research projects for our cohort of MRes students. You will also be able to contribute to and benefit from the other research projects ongoing within the Hamlyn Centre, for instance the large EPSRC funded ROBOGAST and OASIS awards. You will be a key member within the Centre’s team of engineers, scientists and clinicians drawn from multiple departments of Imperial College and the NHS.
What we are looking for:
You will hold a PhD in Medical Robotics, Visual Computing, Machine Learning, AI, Medical Imaging, Image Guided Intervention or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience, and have programming experience in C++/Python and ML. Multiple years’ experience at postdoc level and a strong publication aligned with a senior postdoc career status would also be highly desirable so that you are able to demonstrate that you are well placed to apply for an independent research fellowship. Experience of working with clinical partners is important, and you should also have a creative approach to research projects and exceptional problem-solving skills. Communication and scientific writing skills are also required to ensure the widest impact of the work. You should be dedicated to training our Master’s students in research methods, and also have a creative mind for developing your own independent research stream. You will also be committed to championing the ‘Imperial Expectations’.
