This year Edinburgh Napier University has been named the number one modern university in Scotland by the 2022 Sunday Times Good University Guide, while it has ranked first in in Edinburgh for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey in each of the last three years.

Our award-winning School of Arts & Creative Industries (SACI) hosts a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and plays an active part in the creative industries across Scotland.

We are number 1 for English out of all UK modern universities (Complete University Guide 2022), and all members of the English team are research active. To find more information about our research please see the Centre for Arts, Media, and Culture (CAMC).

As such, we are currently recruiting a Lecturer in English to join the team and assist us in working towards our ambition to be in the top ten for creative industries among UK Higher Education Institutions, by delivering high quality, student-centred teaching and high-quality research.

The Role:

The Lecturer in English post will give you the opportunity to use your high-level experience of developing, designing and delivering teaching, to contribute to the delivery of our successful English Suite, including BA (Hons) English, BA (Hons) English & Film, and BA (Hons) Acting & English.

Your ability to teach across a range of genres and forms will allow you to teach flexibly across the curriculum (including both literary and screen studies) and historical periods, using a diverse range of assessment methods.  This will see you teaching on existing modules alongside current staff, and you will also have the opportunity to develop a specialist module at Honours level.

Your commitment to student-centred learning and supporting and developing new learners will also stand you in good stead, as you act as Personal Tutor for students and supervise dissertations at undergraduate level and postgraduate research students, as appropriate.

Furthermore, your record of REF-eligible publications (commensurate with career stage), and research plan (with potential for external income generation), will put you in an excellent position to teach innovative conceptual approaches to literature or offer new perspectives and readings.

What we will need from you:

We would like to speak to individuals with a research specialism in some area of 17th to early-19th century literature, and who also have the ability to teach more widely across the curriculum.

An advantage would be an interest in areas such as global Romanticism, environmental studies, education for sustainability, non-canonical or popular literature, children’s literature.

Further to this, the following criteria are essential:

  • Doctoral level qualification
  • Postgraduate or Undergraduate degree, demonstrable subject expertise in the area
  • A recent and relevant professional publication record
  • Relevant recent teaching experience and evidence of a professional academic profile alongside a commitment to sustained continuous professional development
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Benefits:

Join us and you will find that we offer support and recognition wherever due, as well as fantastic benefits such as an attractive pension with employer contributions of 23% and 46 days holiday.

Additional:

Salary: £42,155- £51,805 per-annum (G6)

Full Time - 35 hours pw

Closing 11.59pm 23/04/2023

Interviews wc 08/05/2023.
