Applications are invited for the post of Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Advanced Eastern European Jewish Studies in the Department of History / Holocaust Research Institute.
The Holocaust Research Institute (HRI) at Royal Holloway, University of London, is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral research fellow for a major donor-funded project, “Global Jewish Studies in/as Holocaust Studies”. The postholder will carry out research in the HRI, teach the third-year undergraduate special subject “The Holocaust” (HS3264) or other relevant modules, and advance the interests of the HRI with respect to the wider scholarly community and the general public. The post is fixed term for a period of 23 months, starting 1 October 2023.
“Global Jewish Studies in/as Holocaust Studies” seeks to integrate Jewish Studies and Holocaust Studies. Through a combination of research projects, visiting lecturers, new MA modules, summer schools and the creation of an academic network, the HRI seeks to embed Jewish Studies into its work and to advance the discipline of Holocaust Studies nationally and internationally. The postdoctoral position covers modern Eastern European Jewish history (19th-20th centuries) with a global focus and with a methodological expertise in digital humanities. The postholder will work alongside colleagues in the HRI, the Department of History, and the School of Humanities.
The postholder will be expected to conduct research in a relevant field of modern Eastern European Jewish history with a global focus, and with the aim of completing a major postdoctoral project; to teach relevant undergraduate courses and, if required, on the HRI’s MA in Holocaust Studies; to advise postgraduate research students, as appropriate; to contribute to the profile of the HRI by participating in the activities of the Institute; to contribute to the History Department by participating in meetings, seminars, etc.; to collaborate with partners, such as the Wiener Holocaust Library, Imperial War Museums, and USHMM; and to carry out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the Principal Investigator. Duties and responsibilities may be amended by the Principal Investigator as necessary, in consultation with the post-holder.
