About us
The UCL Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering wishes to appoint a Research Fellow to work on an EPSRC funded project – “Phosphide-based nanowires for visible and near-infrared miniature photon emitters”. The main objective of the project is to develop micron and sub-micron visible and near infrared emitters for applications including displays, imaging and sensing. This will comprise an extensive programme of growth development, optical and structural characterisation and device fabrication using the complementary expertise among the University of Sheffield, the University of Warwick and UCL.
About the role
One of the tasks of UCL is to carry out the epitaxial growth of III-V nanowire devices. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to develop expertise in the areas of III-V nanowire growth and fabrication, and epitaxial growth by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE).
The main activities of the role are to:
The post is available from 1st April 2023 until 31st October 2025 in the first instance. Further funding to support the post may be available.
About you
Candidates should have a PhD degree (or about to submit) in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science or a related field. Proven capability in the epitaxial growth or fabrication of advanced III-V electronic and/or opto-electronic components is essential, as well as a track record in III-V nanowire growth by MBE or MOCVD. Understanding quantum effects in solids and semiconductors is also required.
The ability to simulate and model semiconductor nanostructures/heterostructures is desirable.
If the successful candidate has not yet been awarded their PhD, appointment will be made as a Research Assistant (Grade 6B). Payment at Grade 7 will be backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis including corrections, once the PhD has been awarded. The salary scale for Research Assistant (Grade 6B), point 25-27 is £35,702 to £37,548 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
