Are you interested in conducting leading AI / machine learning research across discipline boundaries AND building standardised open-source software to disseminate such research to the broadest possible userbase for the greatest possible impact?

We have one opening for a Senior AI Research Engineer or AI Research Engineer. You will be part of a new AI Research Engineering team consisting of five full-time members in total, each having a specific focus while working jointly towards maximising the benefits of AI to promising and impactful areas of research across the whole of the University of Sheffield. This team is part of the University’s multi-million-pound investment to establish the new Centre for Machine Intelligence.

This position is ideal for those with a passion for AI/machine learning research AND software development.

As a (Senior) AI research engineer, you will work with the team to: assess and select AI/machine learning projects across the University; perform deep analysis on the requirements, feasibility, and impact; conduct AI/machine learning research to address gaps and challenges; design and build standardised software libraries following the FAIR (findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability) principles; deploy and maintain such software libraries, and disseminate research outcomes via top research papers, tutorials, and hackathons.

You will work collaboratively with the Sheffield AI community members including academic/research staff and research software engineers. Through your work as an AI research engineer, you will have the opportunity to explore research and academic career pathways and there is the potential to jointly build AI-powered spinout companies from high-impact projects. For an AI Research Engineer, you may register for a part-time PhD (with fee waiver) if interested.

You will be expected to have keen interests in interdisciplinary AI/machine learning research, excellent research record or potential in AI/machine learning or related areas, high-quality software development experience or potential, solid mathematical background and programming skills, and ability of effective team working, collaboration, and time management.
