This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is interested in working in a dynamic environment with an international and multi-disciplinary team. This is a new role to provide financial and administrative support to the University of Essex Research team of the GEMMS Global Health Research Group; especially the Principal Investigator and the Senior Research Manager.

This role is essential for the smooth running of GEMMS, so we are looking for someone who has excellent interpersonal skills, who takes initiative and enjoys managing and organising a diverse workload. The successful candidate will support the day to day running of the UK based GEMMS team. They will also be part of the wider GEMMS team based in Cambodia, India, Zimbabwe, South Africa and the UK. The role is suitable for someone who enjoys a diverse workload from budgeting and managing payments through to supporting workshops and meetings and managing the UK GEMMS communications.

Duties of the Role

The postholder will support with the University of Essex team by providing administrative and financial support. They will oversee invoicing, payments purchasing, monitoring budgets, and supporting the delivery of quarterly financial statements to the funder.

They will provide general administrative support to the team, especially in coordinating and managing meetings, events and other activities. They will support communications activities of the UK GEMMS team.

This is a fixed term part-time post, until 1 July 2026 with the GEMMS Global Health Research Group for 7.2 hours per week (0.2 FTE).

Skills and qualifications required

The successful applicant will have a good standard of education including 5 GCSEs (grades A-C) or equivalent, including English Language and Mathematics. A degree (or equivalent level qualification or experience) and a relevant administrative (or equivalent) qualification is also desirable.

Additionally, they will have experience of working in a busy office environment, supporting time dependent programmes or activities to meet targets and deadlines. Experience of working in a research environment is particularly welcome. They will have first class time management and organisational skills, and the ability to deal effectively with multiple priorities.

A flexible approach to work to assist as and when required (e.g. to cover sickness absence) is welcome. As this is an international research programme (working across three continents) and due to time differences, there may be occasions when meetings are organised outside normal working hours.
