The Medical Research Council Toxicology Unit is an internationally renowned institution focussed on the delivery of field-changing mechanistic insights into toxicology and disease.

We are looking to appoint a Building and Maintenance Supervisor to oversee the maintenance and installation of mechanical and electrical services for the Toxicology Unit to support the effective operation of the building's activity.

Main duties of the role will include:

  •           Responsible for breakdown and preventive maintenance programmes
  •           Understanding the workings of the Unit's critical, specialist/non-specialist mechanical & electrical systems, responding to situations as they arise¿ 
  •           Plan and co-ordinate building and refurbishment projects in liaison with the Facilities/Laboratory Manager
  •           Carry out and supervise safety routines including Fire Safety, Water Hygiene and Steam Boilers
  •           Departmental Fire Safety Officer and Departmental Deputy for Water Safety
  •           Carry out risk assessments in conjunction with the Departmental Safety Officer
  •           Manage storage space for the Unit 
  •           Manage stores collection and distribution 
  •           Provide out of hours / on call emergency cover
  •           Day to day supervision of the Building Support/Premises Assistant

You will be educated to Degree/ Level 6 vocational qualification or have equivalent level of practical experience, qualifications in mechanical/electrical/steam boilers would be an advantage.  Experience of building maintenance and of specialised electrical systems, together with good diagnostics and problem solving skills are essential.  You will need a good working knowledge of health & safety and fire safety legislation and to be able to demonstrate an advanced knowledge of building services.  Your excellent communication skills will enable you to build good working relationships with contractors and staff at all levels.
