The School of Physics, Engineering and Technology brings physicists and engineers together to push the frontiers of knowledge, foster innovation and meet the grand challenges facing society. Our aim is to develop new technologies that work for the public good, in an environment where everyone can thrive.
As a School, equality, diversity, and inclusion are central to our culture and we strive to provide a working environment which allows all staff and students to contribute fully, to flourish, and to excel. We aim to ensure that there is a supportive and egalitarian culture at all levels and offer a range of family-friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, staff engagement forums, campus facilities and services to support staff from different backgrounds. The School is proud to hold Juno Champion, and Athena Swan awards.
The School has recently secured very substantial funding for several wireless communications projects focussing on Open RAN for next generation radio access networks. YO-RAN, a £7.3M collaborative project led by York, has recently started funded by UK Government, Department of Digital, Science Innovation and Technology as part of its Future Open Networks Research Challenge. Alongside YO-RAN a new, York-led £5.1M project has recently been awarded on O-RAN funded by UK Government.
The role involves working on developing parts of the RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC), including developing modern machine learning techniques for 6G and beyond networks. Through collaboration with other academic and industrial partners, you will also contribute to small, medium and large-scale testing and trials of 6G systems incorporating the developed techniques. The role also involves creating and protecting intellectual property, via patents as well as authoring scientific publications. More widely, within 6G, our main focus is on technologies like Open-RAN, non-terrestrial networks, digital twins, and neutral host technologies. You will join a dynamic team of experienced and early career researchers who are working on similar and relevant projects. This role is available on a fixed-term basis until 31 March 2025.
