The School has recently secured very substantial funding for several wireless communications projects focussing on Open RAN for next generation radio access networks. YO-RAN, a £7.3M collaborative project led by York, has recently started funded by UK Government, Department of Digital, Science Innovation and Technology as part of its Future Open Networks Research Challenge. Alongside YO-RAN a new, York-led £5.1M project has recently been awarded on O-RAN funded by UK Government.

Role
The role involves working on developing parts of the RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC), including developing modern machine learning techniques for 6G and beyond networks. Through collaboration with other academic and industrial partners, you will also contribute to small, medium and large-scale testing and trials of 6G systems incorporating the developed techniques. The role also involves creating and protecting intellectual property, via patents as well as authoring scientific publications. More widely, within 6G, our main focus is on technologies like Open-RAN, non-terrestrial networks, digital twins, and neutral host technologies. You will join a dynamic team of experienced and early career researchers who are working on similar and relevant projects. This role is available on a fixed-term basis until 31 March 2025.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications
You will have:

  • First degree Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or a cognate discipline or equivalent experience.
  • PhD in Communications Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge in wireless communications and a range of research techniques and methodologies.
  • Has research expertise in the area of wireless communication and networking, 5G and beyond.
  • Experience of undertaking publicly evidenced high quality research.
  • Evidenced active participation in the planning and advancement of research projects.
  • Proven ability to attract and obtain external research funding.
  • Successful management of research projects including supervision of the work of others and providing expert advice and guidance to teams.
  • Evidence of dissemination of scholarly work.
  • Well-developed analytical skills and computer programming skills in at least one of the common languages in wireless networking essential research, i.e. MATLAB, Python, C++.
  • Knowledge of modern and open networking technologies e.g. SDN, NFV, OpenFlow, Open-RAN, appropriate 3GPP and/or O-RAN standards and decision making mechanisms including convex optimisation, and machine learning is desirable.
