Fixed Term 24 Month
The School of Environmental Sciences (SES), Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Hull, wishes to appoint a 24 month Post Doctoral Research Assistant in Marine Biology and bioacoustics.
The postholder will join a team led by Dr Krysia Mazik (SES) and Dr Thomas Breithaupt (School of Natural Sciences) to work on a four year NERC-funded project: Benthic Offshore Wind Interactions Evaluation (BOWIE), as part of the NERC / Crown Estate ECOWind Programme (https://ecowind.uk/). This project is a collaboration between the Universities of Southampton, Hull and East Anglia, together with the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and the Centre for Fisheries and Aquacultural Science (CEFAS). We will explore the impacts of physical disturbance, pile driving-induced vibration and alteration of marine habitats on benthic (seabed-dwelling) species, against a background of increasing pressure arising from climate change and bottom trawling. Data generated from field and laboratory studies will feed into models which will be used to inform decision support tools to facilitate the consenting process for offshore windfarm development.
The postholder will conduct aquarium-based experimental work to determine the effects of pile driving-induced vibrations on the sea bed on ecologically important benthic invertebrate species, using physiological and behavioural assays. They will work closely with a second PDRA (Marine Benthic Ecologist). We are willing to support a flexible working pattern within the timescale of the project.
Informal enquiries can be sent to Dr Krysia Mazik (K.Mazik@hull.ac.uk) or Dr Thomas Breithaupt (T.Breithaupt@hull.ac.uk)
