We are looking for an collegiate and well-organised laboratory microbiologist to join the Veterinary Microbiology Laboratory in Easter Bush Pathology, part of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies on the Easter Bush Campus, University of Edinburgh. The laboratory provides a diagnostic microbiology service to internal clinicians from the Small and Large Animal Hospitals and Practices. Clients also include external clinicians from local veterinary practices and internal and external microbiology researchers.

Working under the Microbiology Laboratory Manager, the post-holder will have a key role in the effective running of the diagnostic service ensuring the rapid and professional reporting of accurate identification and antimicrobial sensitivity testing results to clinicians and other clients. In addition, the post-holder will contribute across all of the laboratory activities including culture and identification, antimicrobial sensitivity testing, molecular microbiology, isolate archiving and database maintenance, reagent ordering and preparation, development of new diagnostic assays and contribute to microbiology research projects, teaching, student supervision and outreach. 

Your skills and attributes for success: 

  • Practical experience of microbiology diagnostic techniques, accompanied by a comprehensive understanding of fundamental bacteriological and fungal principles. 
  • An appropriate qualification in microbiology or a related biomedical science, or equivalent experience is essential. 
  • Working within a small laboratory team, the candidate must work well without direct supervision while also performing as part of that team.
  • Strong time management and organisational skills, a good knowledge of safe laboratory practice, the ability to work to deadlines, excellent communication skills and a professional manner with colleagues and clients.
  • Must be computer literate with commonly used software programmes.
