We are currently seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral research associate to join Dr. Wooli Bae’s research group at the University of Surrey. During this three-year position (fixed- term contract for 36 months), the postdoc will lead cutting-edge projects in DNA and RNA nanotechnology.

The postdoc will be involved in several projects to develop novel methods of DNA and RNA strand displacement reactions. These include:

  • Testing novel DNA strand displacement mechanisms for highly parallel information processing in DNA-based information storage devices.  
  • Advancing RNA computation for synthetic biology applications.

These interdisciplinary projects involve experimental work spanning DNA and RNA nanotechnology, synthetic biology, membrane biophysics, and microfluidics with implications in DNA-based information storage devices and the origin of life. The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Wooli Bae and his group members, as well as collaborators at Imperial College London.

The post is ideally suited for someone with a keen interest in advancing dynamic DNA and RNA nanotechnology by developing new fundamental mechanisms. The postdoc will be expected to travel and work with collaborators in Germany, Belgium, South Korea, and Japan.

Key responsibilities

You will be conducting individual and collaborate research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator, writing and publishing research articles in peer-reviewed journals, presenting research findings at conferences and seminars.

You will have opportunities to mentor and train undergraduate and postgraduate students, actively participating in lab meetings and other academic activities and contribute to developing research proposals and project management as well as continuing professional development by engaging with appropriate training courses. 

Key requirements

Minimum qualification are PhD in a relevant field such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Biochemistry, with strong laboratory experience in molecular biology (Experience in DNA or RNA nanotechnology and fluorescence measurement). A demonstrated ability to conduct independent research activities and good communication skills in English are desirable. A strong track record in publishing original research articles in peer-reviewed journals is preferred.
