The Faculty of History and the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA), in association with St Antony’s College, propose to appoint to an Associate Professorship in African History.

OSGA is one of the fifteen constituent parts of the Social Sciences Division at Oxford. The School represents a commitment by the University to enhancing teaching and research in Area Studies. About the Role:

The post is offered on a full-time basis, available from 1 October 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. Appointments to Associate Professorships are confirmed as permanent on successful completion of a review during the first five years.  The successful candidate will be expected to undertake advanced, internationally excellent research; to teach and to supervise at undergraduate and graduate levels in lectures, classes, fieldwork and small-group tutorials; to contribute to admissions, examining, and assessment, and to contribute fully to academic administration in both University units and the College.

The post will be held in conjunction with a Governing Body Fellowship at St Antony’s College. For the College, the post will entail advising students, serving on committees, and participating in its running as a College member and trustee.

About You:

The candidate will have expertise in sub-Saharan African History since 1880, and in particular Central African or West African history and a doctorate and a research track record within African History.

We particularly welcome applications from candidates at all career stages, from women, people with disabilities, and Asian, Black and Minority Ethnic candidates, as these groups are currently under-represented in the academic staff of OSGA and Faculty of History.

Circumstances such as caring responsibilities, ill health or disability may result in the quantity of a candidate's outputs being less than might otherwise be expected, therefore when considering candidate's research and publication record, career breaks will be taken into consideration.

Application process:

Queries about the post should be addressed to Professor Robert Iliffe, Chair of the History Faculty Board, at robert.iliffe@history.ox.ac.uk and/or to Professor Paul Chaisty, Head of OSGA, at paul.chaisty@area.ox.ac.uk or telephone: +44 (0) 1865 284748.

All enquiries will be treated in strict confidence and will not form part of the selection decision.

The University of Oxford is committed to fostering an inclusive culture, which promotes equality, values diversity and maintains a working, learning and social environment in which the rights and dignity of all its staff and students are respected. We recognise that the broad range of experiences that a diverse staff and student body brings strengthens our research and enhances our teaching, and that in order for Oxford to remain a world-leading institution we must continue to provide a diverse, inclusive, fair and open environment that allows everyone to grow and flourish. Both, the School and the Faculty hold Bronze Athena Swan Awards to recognise the advancement of gender equality, representation and progression.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon (UK time) on Monday, 22nd January 2024.

Interviews are expected to be held in person in Oxford in March 2024.
