We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate to work on a programme funded by the UKRI-Medical Research Council for 3 years, aimed at development of a new drug discovery platform that will transform the way that we develop drugs of the future. Focused on our exciting cyclic-peptide technology this programme is centred on targeting a G protein coupled receptor (GPCR) for the treatment of severe asthma. Working in collaboration with leading respiratory clinicians and closely with the biotechnology company KelticPharmaTherapeutics Ltd this project is aimed at validating FFAR1 and/or FFAR4 as a novel drug target in the treatment of severe asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) whilst developing a novel GPCR-focused drug discovery platform.
The project builds from our discovery, published in Science Translational Medicine (12, aaw9009 (2020)) that activation of FFAR4 can relieve the symptoms and induce inflammation in pre-clinical mouse models of inflammatory lung disease. Moreover, by studying normal human lung samples and patient-derived lung tissue we have translated the mouse work to human studies that have provided the basis for our hypothesis that activation of FFAR4 can both relieve the symptoms and reduce inflammation in asthma and COPD.This is an opportunity for a highly motivated Research Scientist to conduct basic research with an eye to clinical development.
The candidate will be based at University of Glasgow in state-of-the-art laboratories located in the newly built Advanced Research Centre (ARC) in the heart of the University campus. Working closely with the clinical team based in Leicester and with staff from KelticPharmaTherapeutics the candidate will gain experience in translating fundamental research into a drug discovery programme.
This position is available on a full-time basis and is funded until 30 September 2026.
