Research Scientist in Tropical Climate And High-Impact Weather

As part of the NCAS Tropical Research Group and in collaboration with national and international partners, the post-holder will carry out research to advance our understanding of the chain of processes that modulate the risk of high impact weather, from the large-scale through to local weather, and evaluate the representation of these processes in weather and climate models used for prediction. 

Fixed term role - up to 36 months. 

The role will include:

• Using observations and existing high-resolution convection-permitting simulations to carry out research on understanding the processes responsible for high impact weather in the tropics and its predictability.
• Evaluating the representation of those processes in weather and climate prediction models.
• Contributing to the design of methods for hybrid forecasting of high impact weather in various developing regions based on large-scale drivers.
• Designing, performing, and analysing new convection-permitting regional simulations to quantify the benefits of high-resolution in the representation and prediction of high impact weather, and clarifying whether operating at the kilometre scale fundamentally changes climate projections in tropical regions.

You will have:

• Strong scientific analytic ability and high capacity for problem-solving,
• Good programming skills (e.g., knowledge of Python or other appropriate data processing and visualization language such as R or IDL),
• Have a PhD or equivalent research experience in mathematical or physical sciences, with a publication record appropriate to your experience,
• Research experience in a physical or mathematical science and demonstrated experience of analysing large or complex datasets, and be self-motivated, conscientious, and collaborative.
