Job description:

The School of Medicine is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified doctor for the role of Clinical Teaching and Research Fellow.

This post is suitable for a doctor who is seeking to develop a clinical academic career in clinical education research.

The post holder will be required to become actively involved in the research programme of the School and to register for a PhD (under staff regulations) exploring an aspect of our Learning Communities programme. The research commitment will equate to approximately 8 sessions, with education delivery accounting for the remaining 2 sessions. Limited clinical commitment may also be possible.

The Learning Communities strand is a flagship initiative of the MBBS programme forming a core component of our curriculum aim of developing doctors as "professionals" alongside their scholarly and practitioner skills. The programme is committed to developing student's sense of identity and belonging within medical school and will shape and support students' professional development.

Learning Communities will consist of small groups of students led by a Personal and Professional (PPD) Tutor who meet regularly through the degree programme. PPD tutors will facilitate the delivery of a curriculum focussed on aspects of the art of medicine and professional development that do not fall under a particular specialty or domain. The creation of longitudinal relationships with students and faculty will enable students to develop and grow within a supportive but challenging environment.

Learning Communities will be introduced to the MBBS curriculum in the academic year 2024/25 and the curriculum and course content is currently in development. There are opportunities for novel educational research in relation to Learning Communities.

The post is suitable for a doctor who can demonstrate a commitment to medical education. They should have excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills and be passionate about advancing the discipline through high quality research outputs.

The appointment is full time and tenable for 3 years in the first instance.

The salary for this role will be as per the Clinical Lecturer / Doctors in Training payscale, ranging £37,303 to £63,152 and depending on experience on appointment.

Informal enquires may be made to Dr Nicky Mulgrew, Course Director Learning Communities: Nicola.Mulgrew@newcastle.ac.uk, Professor Clare Guilding Director of Education: clare.guilding@newcastle.ac.uk or Professor Paul Paes, Director of Medical Studies: paul.paes@newcastle.ac.uk
