The Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin) is one of the world's leading art universities with a long tradition. It is an important partner in Berlin’s network of culture, art and science and artistic activities in Berlin. More than 200 professors, around 250 employees in art and sciences, and around 300 employees in administration, libraries, service and technology work at the UdK Berlin. More than 4,000 students (30 % of them international) are enrolled in over 70 degree programmes at the four colleges of Fine Arts/Architecture, Media and Design/Music, and Performing Arts, as well as at the Central Institute for Continued Education (ZIW), the Inter-University Centre for Dance (HZT) and the Jazz Institute Berlin (JIB). The UdK Berlin offers teacher education programmes in the subjects of Fine Arts, Music and Theatre/Performing Arts. The UdK Berlin is one of the few art colleges in Germany with the right to confer doctorates and post-doctoral qualifications.

Through the diverse activities of its members, the institution contributes to a culture of exchange with Berlin’s civil society and the global audience that is both artistically and academically guided. Its institutional understanding of a relevant practice within the arts and sciences draws upon a dialogue with the social, political, technological and artistic challenges of the 21st century.

The UdK Berlin, College of Architecture, Media and Design – Institute of Experimental Fashion and Textile Design –, is seeking to appoint a:

PROFESSOR AT A UNIVERSITY OF ARTS (m/f/d)

– Salary group W 2 –
Permanent full-time professorship
Field of teaching: Fashion design I
Teaching obligation: 18 course hours (LVS)

Start of service of the professorship: 1 October 2024

Collaboratively working within a team of fashion design professors, this professorship is intended to explore new conceptual and practical connections between craftsmanship and digital media, as well as to foster critical engagement with current and future discourses of fashion in teaching.

Duties the open position offers:
  • teaching in fashion design (in German and English language)
  • developing and implementing fashion design courses bridging experimental and applied practice
  • teaching analogue design methods at the intersection of new media and other disciplines
  • supervising and supporting students in their semester and graduation projects (BA and MA)
  • contributing to the content and organisational structuring of the teaching
  • innovative advancement of teaching in fashion design
Requirements:
  • completed university degree (Master) in fashion design or a related field
  • proof of teaching experience in higher education
  • proof of several years of professional experience in fashion design
  • German and English language skills, both written and spoken
  • national and international industry-specific networks
  • active participation in team work on the study programme
  • willingness to acquire third-party funding
  • willingness to further develop professional skills
  • appointment requirements in accordance with § 100 of Berlin Act on Higher Education (BerlHG)
  • applicants are requested to submit a concept for their teaching along with their application documents

The candidate commits, in the event of their appointment, to continuously contribute to the self-administration of the university and actively participate in committee work.
