The role

Education and Student Success is a new division at the heart of the University of Bristol, with a mission of ensuring that all our students get an outstanding experience at Bristol, from the moment of first interest through to graduation and beyond. We are building a new leadership team within the Student Opportunity Sub-Division, and you could play a pivotal role in this.

The Assistant Director, International Student Success will form a key part of this new team.  Working in close partnership with the Division for Global Engagement, you will lead a new international student success team, champion international student voice, their needs and experiences and shape interventions with and on their behalf.

The main purpose of this role is to: lead the successful onboarding of international students, develop inclusive student communities in which all belong, and facilitate the conditions for academic success and outcomes.

The role is primarily based on campus with up to two days home working.

What will you be doing?

In this role you will:

  • Establish an international student success team.
  • Lead and develop policy and practice to improve the transition, experience, engagement, support and sense of belonging of international students.
  • Work closely with colleagues in the International Office to ensure synergies in recruitment, transition and student experience strategies.
  • In collaboration with the Student Experience sub-division, undertake analysis to understand systemic gaps in the design and delivery of essential support services.
  • In partnership with education leaders, generate the insights and interventions that will support positive progression outcomes for international students.
  • Interrogate data in relation to progression rates from foundation programmes, Year 1 to Year 2 on to graduation, report findings to senior committees making recommendations for future policy where necessary.
  • Work with the Bristol Doctoral College to ensure that the diverse needs of PGR students experience are accounted for within all international student success interventions.
  • Work with colleagues from across the University to ensure inclusive curricula and teaching practice, meeting the needs of an evolving population.
  • Drive a data informed, evaluative approach to all interventions, ensuring continuous improvement and demonstrable return on investment.

  • Leadership experience in an international student recruitment/support/inclusion environment.
  • Experience of leading multiple functions with complex remits
  • Ability to develop and operationalise strategy.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant regulations and legislation and the implications of non-compliance by the University.
  • Astute understanding of changes in education, economic, societal, governmental and technological environments and their impact on international student cohorts.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to influence, negotiate and motivate at all levels.
