Just Earth Observation for Conservation is a £2.5 million research project, funded by the UK’s Economic and Social Sciences Research Council (ESRC), focused on understanding the justice implications of the increased use of earth observation (EO) technologies such as satellites and drones in biodiversity conservation. Over the course of 5 years, JEO4C’s aim is to transform understanding of the conservation ‘datascape’ and co-develop strategies by which remote sensing can support conservation which is both ecologically impactful and socially just. The project will work intensively in four conservation landscapes in the UK, Spain, Guatemala, and Kenya, while developing recommendations to reshape global best practice on data-driven conservation.

As part of JEO4C’s work, we are seeking to appoint a long-term (4 years, flexible start in early to mid 2024) post-doctoral research associate based in the Global Development Institute (GDI) at the University of Manchester. You will have a central role in shaping the direction and delivery of this project. You will collect and analyse qualitative interview and workshop data involving a wide range of actors, as well as developing skills in co-design methodologies. You will be supported and mentored to develop a strong publication profile in a rapid developing research area, as well as benefitting from international network-building and tailored professional development opportunities offered by JEO4C and the University of Manchester (e.g., PROSPER Postdoc Career Development Programme).  You will also benefit from being part of the supportive collaborative environment of multi-disciplinary researchers across diverse career stages within the Resources, Environment and Development research group in GDI.
