Academic Course Leader (BA(Hons) Business/FdA Business)

Overall Purpose of Post: To oversee a team of full-time and part-time lecturers and to assist the Academic Manager with their duties, roles, and responsibilities.                                                   

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Address and resolve issues relating to the quality of the course delivery, student satisfaction, student progress, and retention as they arise. 
  2. Provide academic leadership to implement College policy, practice, and processes. 
  3. Liaise and work with the course team and the wider College staff to ensure students receive a high-quality academic experience and support. 
  4. Liaise and work with the course team and external colleagues to support course design and delivery and to enhance the course design and future enhancements.

General Responsibilities:

Course Management and Administration 

  1. Ensure that the Course and Module Specifications, Assessments, Study Guides, and Feedback plans are up to date and relevant and made available to students.
  2. Ensure that marking, moderation, and feedback are completed promptly and undertaken ethically, accurately, and to a high standard.
  3. Discuss and agree on resource requirements for the course, including rooms, equipment, and technology needs, ensuring that academic texts and resources are available to deliver the course within agreed resourcing parameters.
  4. Ensure that lecturers and students have attended induction so that they are aware of college facilities, including health and safety and student support facilities, i.e., welfare.
  5. Support College administration in maintaining student records.

Academic Leadership

  1. Together with colleagues, investigate any matters arising through module leaders and/or students. Advise as appropriate or escalate to the Academic Manager or other College staff.
  2. Support and implement change delivery by supporting the implementation of college strategic projects, i.e., curriculum review, employability initiatives, etc.
  3. Support the Academic Manager in complying with college and statutory requirements as directed by the awarding bodies/statutory requirements.
  4. Support students in college initiatives in progression to work, further education, or alumni activities. 

Quality assurance and enhancement 

  1. Work with team members to plan and create annual assessments and feedback for the course.
  2. Work with team members to ensure that all assessments, including marking and moderation, are aligned with college and partner quality standards.
  3. Discuss extensions to coursework deadlines and late and missing assessments with colleagues and agree on action as appropriate.
  4. Work with Module Leaders to coordinate the marking of students' assessments, internal moderation, and the correlation of results.
  5. Attend the Board of Examiners and other Course Committees and make recommendations and actions on behalf of the Course team.
  6. Organise and administer Peer Observations and Teacher Observations in line with college requirements.
  7. Organise and Chair course team (lecturer) meetings to review and organise ongoing work, identify any issues and students at risk, and organise follow-up action.

Student Support

  1. With course team members, help students acquire academic support with specific issues or signpost students with special needs to the College Welfare Team as appropriate.
  2. Refer issues for pastoral care to student support services or other specialist services available within the College.
  3. Ensure support for students who have been identified as “at risk” for either lack of academic progress or lack of attendance (or both) if appropriate.
  4. Ensure students and colleagues know procedures for Extenuating Circumstances, Academic Appeals, and Academic Misconduct.
  5. Contribute to the handling of Academic Appeals and Academic Misconduct as indicated through College Policy and as directed by the Academic Manager.

Other General College Duties:

  1. Work flexibly as part of the College team to ensure the smooth running of the College’s premises and facilities
  2. Participate actively and flexibly in a range of College-wide activities, such as duty rotas, enrolment, and marketing events
  3. Participate in training and team development activities, to develop and update skills and knowledge
  4. Understand and be committed to the College’s health and safety Policy statement and the College’s safety priorities and be aware of your contribution to them
  5. Be aware of the College’s equality policies and demonstrate commitment and enthusiasm to promote the principle of equality and diversity throughout all aspects of your work
  6. Be familiar with safeguarding requirements as outlined in the College’s policies and comply with its requirements to safeguard and protect the welfare of young people and vulnerable adults
  7. Undertake such additional duties or projects as directed by the directors or senior managers of the College.

Person Specification:

The successful candidate should have the knowledge and competence required for standard acceptable performance in carrying out this role.

Essential:

  • A Master’s Degree in an appropriate academic field/experience in the subject or a closely related discipline
  • The attitude and ability to engage in continuous professional development i.e. FHEA
  • Fully Computer Literate and operate to at least an intermediate level with Word, Access, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
  • The ability to work effectively under pressure and tight deadline 

Desirable:

  • Experience in delivering teaching online and/or blended learning
  • Experience in managing small teams (preferably) of academics
  • Teamwork skills to work in collaboration with existing group members
  • The aptitude to develop familiarity with a variety of strategies to promote and assess learning
  • Enthusiasm for delivering undergraduate programmes
  • Proven academic leadership skill
