About the Department:

The Legal & Governance Team is one of the School's groupings of Professional and Support Services and is headed by the Director of Governance. The team is the School’s point of contact with the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA).

The teams provide independent support to staff and students covering complaints, disciplinary cases, academic appeals & academic misconduct cases as well as providing some legal and regulatory advice to colleagues.

About the role

The Student Casework Adviser is responsible for supporting the management of student disciplinary & academic misconduct cases, as well as student complaints and academic appeals.  Along with other team members, the postholder will support the Student Casework Manager to ensure the provision of a high-quality service and in particular, the independent and timely investigation of student cases.

This is a valued &  challenging role which requires high levels of confidentiality, sensitivity & resilience. Focusing on conduct casework & handling cases under the School's Student Disciplinary Procedure this would be a hands-on investigation role, working as part of a team dealing with a range of sometimes difficult cases, which can involve allegations of matters which could be criminal offences (including those involving accusations of sexual or gender-based violence). The post has direct contact with students who are subject to investigation under the Student Code of Conduct.

About you

You will need to demonstrate:

Essential

  • Educated to a degree level or have equivalent experience
  • Experience in a similar case-handling or customer-facing/problem-solving role, ideally within higher education
  • Experience of working within a highly sensitive, highly regulated area of activity, developing policy and engaging with external bodies required
  • Demonstrable ability to prioritise work, to use own initiative & judgement and to be proactive
  • Well-organised, excellent at record keeping and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, including oral and written skills, possessing the ability to communicate and influence at all levels and with clarity, tact & diplomacy
  • Excellent attention to detail and an ability to analyse, interpret, amend and develop a range of documentation within a regulatory framework
  • Demonstrable resilience and working under pressure, with difficult cases & challenging customers
  • Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to achieve results working to strict timescales
  • Able to handle confidential and sensitive information in a professional & discrete manner
  • Able to demonstrate commitment to working as part of a team but able to work on own initiative
  • Excellent IT skills, particularly as it relates to the Microsoft Office suite
  • Flexible approach to working
