Birmingham City University (BCU) is a large and diverse centre for learning that is set in the heart of the City of Birmingham. Within the framework of the university, our Foundation Year sits within the College of Art and Design at our historic Margaret Street campus. 

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a flexible and versatile teacher, maker/researcher who can contribute to the development and teaching of the Art and Design Foundation Year and facilitate learning through a broad range of creative practices. The year is taught from a holistic creative perspective and is made of pathways in Graphics, Illustration, Photography, Fine Art, Art and Design (with Creative Technologies), Animation, Digital Arts and Product Design with students progressing onto BA courses at BCU. 

We are looking for a candidate with previous experience of working in higher education (or relevant professional field within the subject area) and who has up-to-date knowledge of contemporary creative practice. We are seeking a committed individual who can work within a team to deliver high-quality learning for our Foundation year undergraduate students, enthusing them to develop their understanding of creative practices, technical making skills and digital potential from an interdisciplinary perspective.  

As well as contributing to the design, teaching, and delivery of modules, you will be expected to lead workshops that may include forms of digital technology that extend traditional practices into new areas.

Essential Skills:

  • Experience of a creative approach to designing and delivering higher education curriculum at foundation and/or higher levels.
  • A creative practice with confident practical making skills, broad knowledge of materials and a forward-thinking approach to digital technologies.
  • A broad and in-depth understanding of contemporary art and design practices and current trends.
  • A flexible and versatile approach with ability to collaborate with both academic and industry professionals.
  • Experience and success in developing new approaches to learning and teaching methods.
  • Educated to a minimum of an undergraduate degree level in art and design or a relevant subject area.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to persuade, influence and negotiate.
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills.
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office is essential.
  • Experience of Pastoral tutoring to support the diversity of the cohort.

Desirable Skills:

  • HEA or PgCert qualification is desirable.
  • Established or developing research that integrates directly in to teaching.
