Teaching Fellow (Clinical Skills & VBCP)

University of Portsmouth - Faculty of Science and Health

Location: Portsmouth
Salary: £39,347 to £42,978 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 28th February 2024
Closes: 7th March 2024
Job Ref: REC00001473

This is an exciting new position within the Faculty.  The post holder will play a lead role in the delivery of a major new strategic partnership with King's College London (KCL) to deliver a Branch of the KCL MBBS GEM course at the University of Portsmouth from August 2024. This is of strategic importance to the University and region, intending to help address the health and wellbeing needs of the Portsmouth, South East Hampshire and Isle of Wight health and care system.

We are looking for a talented and innovative medical educator who can demonstrate an enthusiastic approach to clinical skills facilitation with a track record of excellence in teaching.  Time spent in clinical skills provides medical students with the key foundation for their clinical years, including communication skills and professional values and behaviours.  The successful role holder will be an integral part of teaching clinical skills.  The role will include examining medical students in an OSCE setting and preparing and setting both mock and OSCE exams.  No clinical component is offered as part of this role but we would welcome applications from healthcare professionals as well as medical educators.

The role holder will also be aware of the potential of values-based clinical practice (VBCP) within the MBBS curriculum, reinforcing the concept that human values is central to the professional formation of students. The successful candidate will promote the opportunity to innovate by integrating the delivery of clinical skills teaching with allied ‘human values’ subjects such as medical humanities and philosophy.  The successful candidate will lead on VBCP through simulated clinical patient scenarios with students participating through experiential and reflective learning.  Clinical communication, medical ethics and law, cultural competence, professionalism and well-being feature in all scenarios.  We would be happy to consider job share requests (for example two 0.5 fte roles, one leading on clinical skills and one leading on VBCP).
