Research Associate

This post is full time and fixed term for up to 2 years 9 months.

We have an opportunity for a Research Associate to make a leading contribution to a project, Glasgow as a Living Lab Accelerating Novel Transformation (GALLANT) funded by NERC strategic programme (P-I Prof. Jamie Toney), Work Package 1, ‘Flood Adaptation and Creation of Riverscapes’ (Work Package), working with Dr Giedre Jokubauskaite (Line Manager), Prof. Larissa Naylor and Dr Martin Hurst (Co-Leads of the Work Package) and the rest of the Work Package team.

Are you interested in research that can support improved climate governance and decision-making capacity around adapting coastal cities to climate change? Within the GALLANT project, our work package is examining options for minimising current and future flood risks to communities in Glasgow’s Clyde Estuary by combining the assessment of the co-benefits of nature-based solutions and climate-resilient urban planning with flood risk modelling, alongside transformative governance arrangements to support adaptation implementation.

This role is focussed on identifying policy, law, practice and financial windows of opportunity to support climate-resilient coastal flood risk governance in Glasgow City Region. The researcher will use qualitative methods from social science, socio-legal studies, and/or human geography to study best practice exemplars in transformative adaptation (from Edinburgh and London) to coastal climate change risks. It will also explore the feasibility of applying these approaches to manage coastal flood risks in the wider Glasgow region, and to support local, site-scale development of adaptation actions.

The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and research impact as well as help manage and direct this complex and challenging Work Package as opportunities allow.

Candidates should have experience of conducting research on the issues of environmental and/or climate governance.
