The post holder will take a lead role in newly funded multi-disciplinary project funded by Cancer Research UK.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful applicant will take a lead role in data science and epidemiology for this newly funded multi-disciplinary project grant for early detection of cancer called the Cancer Loyalty Card Study-2 (CLOCS-2). The purpose of this post is to investigate a novel method for earlier detection of cancer. We have hypothesised that changes in purchasing behaviour, primarily an increase in self-medication to treat these vague cancer symptoms, may provide a novel avenue for earlier diagnosis for cancer. We will work with two high street retailers and utilise the large existing datasets in their loyalty card programmes from participants who consent to the study.

Applicants as part of their application must clearly state how they meet the essential criteria required of these posts. In particular, applicants for postdoctoral roles must hold a PhD or equivalent qualification in biology, epidemiology, computing, behavioural science or closely related disciplines, and should have a strong track record in data science, computing, epidemiology or health analytics. Knowledge of cancer risk, bioinformatics, data science, epidemiology and statistical methods procedures and practical experience within a research environment and or publications in relevant and refereed journals will be required. Additional knowledge in cancer risk, symptoms or early diagnosis would be an advantage.

Essential Requirements

  • *Hold a PhD in Life Sciences or Computing or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant.

  • Computer literate with a good knowledge of different computer programs with experience in data presentation and statistical analyses
  • Record of publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Ability to conduct a detailed review of recent literature
