About us

The Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology is seeking to appoint several talented, dedicated, and passionate Lecturers/Senior Lecturers in the domain of Computer Science. In particular, we are keen to receive applications from individuals with specialism in Software Development, Systems Engineering, App Development, Embedded Systems, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Vision processing, and Web and Cloud Computing to join our thriving academic establishment.

The Dyson Institute was awarded New Degree Awarding Powers in October 2020, and its first independent undergraduate cohort enrolled in September 2021. More recently, we unveiled our MSc in Software Engineering conversion programme to attract academically strong, passionate, and technologically curious postgraduate students who we invest in to become Software leaders of the future.

About the role

Our team consists of over 15 academics from a diversity of engineering disciplines. As one of the Dyson Institute’s academics you will be working in a unique learning environment which will allow you to explore new opportunities, responsibilities, and scope to shape and build your academic career in a dynamic and rapidly evolving Institution. You will interact with engineers and pioneers in the field to co-design and deliver robust, challenging, and inclusive curriculums, with the support of our wider academic community. 

Other responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to the design and development of our Computer Science/Software Engineering provision, meeting appropriate QA standards, and ensuring that it remains relevant to the future of engineering.
  • Identify, define, and undertake teaching, learning and assessment activities at the Undergraduate and/or Postgraduate levels, in line with our teaching delivery strategy.
  • Contribute to the planning of these activities, and as a Senior Lecturer you will oversee measures to sustain the delivery of high-quality teaching.
  • Engage with industry, subject and/or pedagogic research and continuing professional development.
  • Collaborate with Dyson Engineers; support with the development of training and projects that support and apply the learning from the academic programme.
  • Support, define, and comply with The Dyson Institute’s quality assurance standards and procedures.
  • Focus on our learners by providing an appropriate level of pastoral support for the undergraduate/postgraduate cohorts.
  • Additionally, as a Senior Lecturer, you will lead other academics in the delivery, development, and quality assurance of modules, and will supervise student projects. You may also act as an External Examiner at other HEIs.

About you

We are specifically looking for facilitators who are educated to PhD level who can build an effective learning environment through the relay of complex topics and theories with demonstrable creativity, passion, and expertise. We are particularly interested in people with alternative approaches to education and who actively embrace technology to enhance the learning experience. Candidates should be familiar with undertaking independent and/or collaborative research within their own domain or in a pedagogical context and will be supported and encouraged to build on their research portfolio.

To be considered for the Lecturer role, you should be able to demonstrate:

  • Excellence in teaching and assessment at Higher Education level.
  • A proven track record of effective teaching and student assessment in Software Development, Systems Engineering, App Development, Embedded Systems, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Vision processing, and Web and Cloud Computing.
  • Good breadth and depth of more basic concepts as well as specialist knowledge in the discipline, with the ability to articulate learning to a range of audiences and stakeholders.
  • Evidence of development or implementation of new methods of teaching to reflect changes in research, discipline, or in response to student needs. 
  • Undertake individual and collaborative research projects that are publishable in peer-reviewed journals and actively contribute to the Institution’s research profile.

To be considered for the Senior Lecturer role, you should additionally be able to demonstrate:

  • An understanding of the industry application of your subject specialism and have evidence of module and programme development activities.
  • That you already hold a postgraduate qualification, and ideally a PhD in the related discipline(s).
  • Subject matter expertise in your area of speciality
  • Demonstrable experience of designing learning and assessment at module – and preferably course leadership – level
  • Evidence of external engagement through, for example, external examining, accreditation or review activity, professional institute roles, etc.
  • Willingness and capacity to mentor more junior academic staff
  • A focus on continuous improvement with a demonstrable passion for the mentoring and development of people.

Support for New Lecturers

Academic staff appointed to their first Lecturer position at the Dyson Institute will receive personal mentoring and career development aimed to kickstart your career as an academic, including support working towards Fellowship of the HEA.
