Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract

Job Ref: SRF 46809

A thriving research group at University of Reading is seeking to recruit a scientifically ambitious researcher in thermal remote sensing — i.e., in observing Earth’s climate and temperatures from space. The initial focus for this post is research into the lakes forming around the edge of the Greenland ice sheet, and their role in influencing ice stability and melt in a changing climate. The postholder will take up research responsibilities in a range of projects with international space and weather agencies and the UK’s National Centre for Earth Observation, on observations of the temperature of Earth’s surfaces (water, land, cityscapes, ice) in the context of climate change.

You will have:

  • Proven willingness to learn knowledge and skills across physics, mathematics and computing.
  • Strong numeracy and confidence in working with data.
  • Personal skills to work both independently and in a team.
  • Experience in research (PhD or equivalent attainment) and scientific software.
  • An interest in observing the Earth by remote sensing and advancing climate science.

You will join a team of around 8 researchers in Earth observation and climate within the world-class Department of Meteorology at University of Reading. You will apply your physical understanding, numeracy and programming skills to measure by thermal remote sensing the temperature dynamics of elements of Earth’s climate system, creating data and insight relevant to understanding ongoing climate change. You will be part of the UK’s National Centre for Earth Observation, contributing to and benefiting from engagement with a wider pool of scientists seeking to understand the Earth from space. You will develop multiple contacts in other universities and across space and weather forecasting agencies around the world.

Closing date: 26 April 2024
Interviews will be held: 8 May 2024
