The College of Arts & Society, located in the new state-of-the-art Delia Derbyshire Building, is a vibrant community of scholars, researchers, and practitioners with profile across the globe and a heritage of quality built up over 180 years. The School of Art & Design, one of four schools in the College, is home to subject disciplines including Animation, Architecture, Automotive & Transport Design, Design Management, Fashion, Fine Art, Games, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interior Architecture and Design, and Product Design.

The Role

We are looking to appoint a Senior Teaching Fellow to design and deliver specialist technical teaching across the undergraduate Graphic Design curriculum, with some input into postgraduate and complementary programmes across the School of Art & Design.

We pride ourselves on offering an all-round Graphic Design education that prepares students for the future, with courses balancing rigorous teaching of discipline specific principles with industry demands. As Senior Teaching Fellow you will deliver teaching underpinned by six key pillars: technical mastery, critical thinking, problem solving, storytelling, employability, and experimentation.  Above all, you will contribute to the course offering students more than just a simulation of the working world, providing a space for risk taking and serious play.

You will be proactive in the use of digital and new technologies, exploring and developing new approaches to representing design thinking and outcomes, and considering their relevance to the taught curriculum and student skillsets.

Qualifications Required

  • Master’s degree in an appropriate subject OR (if from a professional practice background) a good Honors Degree and an appropriate professional qualification and/or membership
  • A teaching qualification or extensive experience of delivering professional and/or university education
  • PhD and/or active membership of an appropriate professional body would be advantageous
  • Candidates must be qualified (or be willing to become qualified) to teach and assess at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Our Successful Candidate

The successful candidate will be confident to engage with physical and online teaching methods, practices, tools, and an integrated, and at times, cross-disciplinary approach to studio teaching and learning. They will be an effective educator, keen to continue/build an academic profile in Graphic Design, and with practical experience in digital and user centred design.  You will be fluent in core Adobe software and have strong technical capabilities relevant to current industry practice.

Enthusiastic and self-motivated, our successful candidate will have experience in the development and enhancement of an ‘active learning’ pedagogy as appropriate to the academic subject area.  You will bring a critical interest and experience in emerging technologies such as AI and AR. Experience in teaching digital design (video, app, web, 3D and interactive design), as well as knowledge of typography including type design, are also desirable.

With a record of achievement in the areas of Graphic Design and curricula development, you will bring a high-level of digital fluency with experience of creating teaching materials for face to face and online teaching using a Virtual Learning Environment.  Joining a global education provider, you will also demonstrate high levels of cultural awareness and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds.
