Job Summary

The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a skilled and enthusiastic individual for a Research Assistant or Associate position within the Clean Energy Processes (CEP) Laboratory. The CEP team conducts research on fundamental aspects of thermodynamics, fluid flow, heat and mass transfer processes with applications to the development of emerging, disruptive energy technologies for solar-driven polygeneration, heat conversion, and energy storage.

This is an exciting opportunity to take a leading role within a multi-disciplinary research group. As a member of the CEP Laboratory, you will contribute to the research effort by developing advanced theoretical, experimental and/or modelling techniques, depending on your profile, to provide new insights into complex transport thermal-fluid processes and to unlock and inform the design of disruptive future energy technologies.

Experience with state-of-the-art optical techniques to explore fundamental thermal-fluid processes in complex flows (such as multiphase/interfacial flows with phase change or reaction) is desirable.

You will be expected to undertake some project management activities, supervise multi-disciplinary teams, assist in supervising undergraduate, MSc and PhD students, submit publications to refereed journals and attract external research funding. As part of this role, you will also perform editorial tasks and support Professor Markides in performing his duties as Editor-in-Chief of Applied Thermal Engineering.

Essential requirements

The applicants should have a degree in Chemical/Mechanical Engineering or a related field of study. It is also desirable that they have demonstrated skills in optical diagnostic measurement techniques, and/or a strong foundation in conventional and renewable energy technology and system modelling.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £40,694 – £43,888 per annum.
