English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Subject Lead

University of Bristol - Faculty of Arts

Location: Bristol
Salary: £41,732 to £46,974 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 18th March 2024
Closes: 7th April 2024
Job Ref: ACAD107463

The role

We are looking for EAP practitioners comfortable working with any discipline in any context. You will initially focus on our well-established In-sessional provision at CALD (Centre for Academic Language & Development) but as we aim to rotate subject lead roles every 3-5 years within the Centre, in time you may move to work with colleagues on our international foundation programme.

The Insessional within CALD provides a lot of creative challenges to keep you motivated. You need to be comfortable with ambiguity and finding a novel way forward rather than the obvious solution. Although, we’re confident we’ve got ‘the basics’ covered, we are a highly reflexive team always looking at what else we can do or how we can do it differently. We’re looking for four EAP Subject Leads to contribute to the provision by drawing on theories to analyse the needs of particular cohorts, inform curriculum & materials design, and underpin our teaching practice.

We give ourselves, and are given, a lot to do on the Insessional, but we are a supportive team looking for people who are genuinely excited by the above and who can bring in new perspectives to develop their colleagues, the Centre, & students. In return for your commitment, flexibility, and motivation, we promise to stretch and develop you further in achieving your own developmental goals and we have a great track record of seeing individuals develop into other roles, both internally and externally to the Centre.

What will you be doing?

  • working closely with Coordinators to collaborate with colleagues across disciplines &  contexts
  • developing a variety of provisions on the Insessional, but most likely focusing on the academic language and literacy UG and PGT discipline specific provisions first
  • working closely with Coordinators to educate staff through network & relationship building on what we do and more importantly why we do it and why they should be involved. This might also be through delivering workshops to staff
  • leading a team in writing material for various provisions

You should apply if

  • You are not only comfortable, but thrive working
    • with ambiguity
    • in a variety of contexts
    • with a variety of individuals with differing levels of awareness, time, and motivation to collaborate
    • autonomously but also within a team
  • You are able to
    • prioritise your workload and meet competing deadlines
    • make connections, collaborate and maintain those working relationships
  • You have
    • a good knowledge of academic discourse, disciplines, and contexts
    • a desire to develop
  • You value
    • feedback and reflexivity
    • supporting and developing others

If you are excited by what this opportunity offers, please look at the job description attached at the bottom of this page for a full description and requirements of the role.
