University of Dundee - School of Medicine Undergraduate Medicine

Location: Dundee

Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 28th March 2024
Closes: 17th April 2024
Job Ref: UOD1430

0.1 FTE / Permanent

We are recruiting for a motivated and experienced colleague to join our MBChB academic team and supervise a studentselected component (SSC). This will help ensure that local SSC teaching capacity continues to keep pace with the required number of SSCs in the Dundee MBChB programme.

SSC blocks in second and third year are long-established and deliver a wide range of curriculum priorities, and simultaneously allow students to pursue areas of specific interest to them. Feedback in both directions suggests that both staff and students enjoy them. Historically, SSC teaching capacity in Tayside has provided placements for most, but not all, students each year, with the shortfall being 'topped up' by external placements and self-proposed SSCs (SPSSCs).

The post-holder will be a medic with experience in data retrieval, e.g. service evaluation, audit, etc. They will be the named supervisor of a large SSC (minimum 20 students, maximum 50). The projects students will get involved in will be hosted by multiple units. Time will be required to prepare for the block, during the running of the block, and immediately afterwards coordinating assessments.

The University of Dundee enjoys an international reputation for excellence that attracts top-class students and academics from across the world – with over 140 countries represented in the University community. You will be based at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, one of Europe’s largest teaching hospitals where the School of Medicine provides outstanding opportunities in medical education and training supported by world class research facilities.

Your priorities will include:

  • Liaise with medical, nursing, pharmacy and IT staff in order to secure projects/placements
  • Discuss specifics of each project, need for permissions to be sought, allocation of students, where students will be hosted (which room, PC, staff member to liaise with)
  • Lead the induction session for all students
  • Lead a separate session on literature searching (all students)
  • Hold trouble-shooting sessions with individual groups of students (2-3 per week)
  • Respond to emails, student enquiries
  • Lead presentation assessment sessions
  • Lead and co-ordinate marking of group projects
  • Lead feedback sessions

The University of Dundee is a signatory of the Researcher Development Concordat and is committed to enhancing the research environment and culture. Engagement and support of activities which assist the researcher development agenda at the University is therefore essential.
