The Role

We are seeking an ambitious academic that is passionate about the national and global opportunities for business and residential estate agency.  Our business-related teaching, research and knowledge exchange is core to our mission of helping young people develop employability skills and fulfil their ambitions as entrepreneurs or business leaders. We pride ourselves on helping the land-based sector find innovative and entrepreneurial solutions to global challenges.  This position also builds upon our award-winning Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Programme (EEP) which provides an inspiring and supportive environment in which our students can share, develop and launch their ideas.

The successful applicant will provide the programme leadership for two new Foundation degree programmes that are due to be delivered from September 2024 at our new campus in Swindon.  The FdSc Residential Estate Agency is a unique programme focussed on those wishing to pursue a career in residential estate agency. The FdSc Business and Enterprise will give students the knowledge, understanding and much sought-after business management skills required to succeed in industry.  Both programmes will be delivered over two days each week at our Swindon Campus which provides modern and fully accessible facilities in an innovative learning space. It is centrally placed enabling easy access by road and rail (a five-minute walk from the railway station).

Candidates will have a proven track record of excellence in HE/FE teaching. Experience of programme management of undergraduate or postgraduate business programmes would be an advantage.  In addition to providing programme leadership, successful applicants will be required to teach relevant modules from the degree programmes to be delivered at the Swindon Campus in one or more of the following disciplines: Entrepreneurship, Business Finance, Marketing, Business Informatics, People and Organisations, Land and Property Markets and Valuation, Property Transactions and Law. Applications from those with practical business experience would be particularly welcomed to impart the authentic real-world experience that is highly valued by our students.

Key Responsibilities

Support excellent, research-informed and practically relevant student learning:

  • Teach relevant RAU undergraduate programmes in Swindon and potentially Cirencester.
  • Act as Programme lead for FdSc Residential Estate Agency & FdSc Business and Enterprise.
  • Address and resolve any issues relating to course delivery, student satisfaction, student progress, and retention as they arise.
  • Articulate subject material in a way that will enable students to demonstrate an understanding of the subject areas through contextualization and critical analysis of case studies and scenarios in the context of their subject area.
  • Contribute to the management, administration and coordination of parts of the teaching programme and its development.
  • Guest teaching on relevant modules.
  • Liaise and work with the course team and the wider University staff to ensure students receive a high-quality academic experience and support.

Enhance the RAU’s impact and reputation as a champion for progressive and inclusive business skills, including:

  • Active knowledge exchange.
  • Media appearances.
  • Speaking at public, policy and industry events.
  • Representing the University at external meetings.
  • Participate in training and team development activities to develop and update skills and knowledge.

Contribute to a thriving, positive University culture:

  • Connect and engage with relevant initiatives across the University, and foster collaboration.
  • Encourage open, inclusive and respectful debate.

All newly appointed academic staff who have not already achieved a relevant teaching qualification for Higher Education or Qualified Teacher Status are expected to study and attain the Post Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) or equivalent within two years of appointment in the role.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students and inspire them to develop as independent learners.
  • Postgraduate teaching qualification and Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (or willingness to achieve within two years of appointment).
  • Experience of undergraduate and / or postgraduate teaching.
  • Experience of design and quality control of modules, course programmes / specifications, and innovative assessment methods.
  • Proven track record in research-informed teaching.
  • Flexibility and capacity to teach across a wide range of courses, and where appropriate in collaboration with specialists from other disciplines.
  • Possess a degree or equivalent professional qualification in a relevant discipline.
  • PhD qualification or Higher Degree (e.g., Masters) in a relevant subject area.
  • Publication in peer-reviewed outlets of international standing.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Management of teams to deliver high quality and timely outputs.
