Background

The Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) will work with industrial and academic partners on an innovative fibre optic sensor and software-based solution to the key infrastructural challenges from the construction industry both in the UK and overseas in a project entitled ‘Digital Industrial-Scale Microwave system for energy-efficient and low-carbon precast concrete production’. The PDRA will be based at the Research Institute of Sensors and Instrumentation at City and this appointment is available immediately.

Responsibilities

The PDRA will tackle the technical challenges in the development of innovative solutions to creating a digital, industrial-scale microwave system for energy-efficient and low-carbon precast concrete production. The PDRA is required to develop a novel sensor system, including both hardware and software, by working together with the industrial and academic partners, to allow the construction, testing and evaluation of the innovative digital, industrial-scale microwave concrete curing system, to allow more energy-efficient and low-carbon precast concrete production.

Person Specification

The successful candidate is required to have expertise in optical fibre sensors and/or optical instrumentation and appropriate software development, coupled to an ability to work closely with and report to industries involved, coordinating with academic and industrial partners.

They must have completed their thesis for a PhD in Optical Engineering, Optical Instrumentation, Optical Sensors, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Physics or a related subject and appropriate software development skills. Having prior experience of working with industry or tackling industry-focused problems is highly desirable.
