The Role

 We are looking for a Head of Game Design and Production to join our teaching team. The successful candidate will lead the design and evolution of our new Game Design and Production degree and, where appropriate, related courses. Key responsibilities include curriculum planning and development, commercial project development with students, recruitment, outreach, industry engagement activities, and other areas of interest for boomsatsuma.

 About You

You will be a self-motivated and experienced higher education professional and/or have a commercial background in game design and production. You will have the ability and confidence to deliver high quality teaching and learning across all three years of the degree. You’ll hold at least an undergraduate degree in a discipline related to games, and have excellent working knowledge of tools, techniques and processes for game design and production. A willingness to learn new skills quickly is a must, whether they be technical, artistic, or pedagogical.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • A Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a relevant discipline
  • Significant and recent experience at a Senior Lecturer level (or equivalent) on a games degree programme, or comparable experience as a senior game designer and/or developer in a commercial setting
  • Strong, practical knowledge of game engine development (ideally Unreal Engine 5), demonstrated through a portfolio
  • Excellent knowledge of game design and production workflows and tools
  • A good working knowledge of gameplay design and level design principles
  • A proven commitment to inclusive practice and collaborative practice, whether in an educational or commercial setting
  • The ability to build positive relationships within a learning community and inspire others
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • A relevant teaching qualification or a willingness to undertake one and/or Fellowship of the HE Academy within 2 years of appointment

Desirable:

  • Experience working with a range of game engines such as, but not limited to, Construct and GameMaker
  • Knowledge and/or practical experience of serious games design
  • Established connections with games industry professionals, studios, and related employers in games and creative technologies.Demonstrable experience contributing to collaborative research and/or development projects in the creative technologies space, either in a commercial or academic setting
  • Exposure to internal and external quality assurance practices related to higher education
  • Experience supporting and leading teams, either in a commercial or academic setting
