About Us

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron; a huge scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. Our scientists use the light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology.

At Diamond we are currently undertaking a major upgrade of the facility, known as Diamond-II. Diamond-II will combine a new machine and new beamlines with a comprehensive series of upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery capabilities and computing, which will ultimately generate an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy.

About the Role

We now have an opportunity for a Senior Power Supplies Technician to work as part of a team to assist with the day-to-day challenges of operating high-performance magnet power supplies.

You will also assist with the development of the next generation of power supplies required for the Diamond-II upgrade project, with a focus on quality, reliability and stability.

Further responsibilities will include:

  • Diagnosis and repair of faults on circuit boards at component level.
  • Design and build of test equipment hardware.
  • Testing circuit boards and modules received from manufacturers.
  • Integration testing of sub-racks and complete racks of power supplies.
  • Preparing materials and equipment for installation.
  • Supervising the electrical wiring for new installations.
  • Commissioning installed equipment.
  • Procuring parts and services.
  • Supporting the operation of the power converters, including being part of the 24 hour on-call team, power converter troubleshooting and repair.
  • Investigating beam trips attributable to the power converters and striving to minimise these.
  • Preparing power converters for operations after each shutdown.
  • Organising repairing and calibration of equipment.

About You

You will hold an appropriate HNC, HND or Degree or demonstrate equivalent relevant experience.

You will have experience from a power supplies background including good working knowledge of engineering drawings and schematics.

You will also have a proven background in the use of laboratory-based testing and an understanding of measurement techniques.

Any experience in the following areas is desirable:

  • Commissioning of power electronic systems.
  • Switched mode power supplies or motor inverters.
  • Working within a QA system.

You will demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills with management, peers, colleagues, customers and suppliers. You will also demonstrate the ability to provide ideas and creative solutions to design problems, and you will display excellent attention to detail.
