Director of Strategy and Operations, IDEA Lab

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced individual to manage strategy and operations within the IDEA Lab at Imperial College Business School. The Director of Strategy and Operations will occupy a central position within the IDEA Lab, playing a decisive role in crafting the strategic direction and operational framework crucial to the team achieving its mission to revolutionize the learning experience and define the future of education.

As Director of Strategy and Operations, you will ensure the smooth functioning of all operational aspects as well as the strategic planning and execution to uphold excellence in the IDEA Lab. You will collaborate closely across departments to drive progress, steer strategic initiatives, oversee projects, and manage partnerships. Your role will extend beyond management to being a strategic advisor, shaping the vision and ensuring the IDEA Lab's growth aligns with the cutting-edge imperatives of Imperial’s strategic vision.

Your role will involve enhancing internal and external communications, ensuring robust cross-collaboration and raising the visibility of our transformative work. You will forge and nurture strategic partnerships and maintain a transparent flow of communication to align our initiatives with the needs of the broader educational ecosystem. The role will require a high level of organisational skill and the ability to manage competing priorities, streamline processes, and maximise efficiency.

You will also lend your expertise to recruitment efforts and oversee training and onboarding efforts to ensure every team member is set up to succeed. You will use your leadership skills to establish and mentor the team’s Project Management Office (PMO), guaranteeing consistency and quality across the team’s output. Embracing a strategic leadership role, you'll oversee reporting for all digital education products and pilots in the IDEA Lab, providing clear status updates to senior stakeholders and ensuring that our strategic objectives translate into actionable plans and successful outcomes.

Duties and responsibilities

Strategic Planning and Execution:

  • Develop and implement long-term strategic plans that align with the overarching goals of the IDEA Lab and Imperial College Business School, ensuring integration of cutting-edge digital learning technologies.
  • Lead the strategic review and analysis of IDEA Lab operations to identify improvement opportunities and implement solutions that enhance productivity and effectiveness.
  • Champion the development and execution of new initiatives that promote scalability and innovation in digital education offerings.
  • Spearhead the research of funding opportunities from diverse sources including government grants, philanthropic foundations, corporate partnerships, internal opportunities, and other relevant avenues, leveraging insights to craft compelling proposals aimed at securing financial support for the initiatives and projects of the IDEA Lab.

Programme Management:

  • Take ownership of the IDEA Lab’s overall project pipeline and calendar of events to ensure all activities are carefully sequenced and planned.
  • Establish and grow the PMO function within the IDEA Lab, implementing and adapting governance processes where necessary to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Oversee the smooth running of the IDEA Lab’s portfolio of digital education products and innovative pilots during the delivery phase.
  • When required, act as Project Manager for individual projects.
  • Provide accurate and engaging status and KPI reporting to peers and senior stakeholders.

Partnership management:

  • Act as the first point of contact for all external partners, ensuring clear communication and building mutually beneficial relationships.
  • Negotiate contract and subscription renewals with vendors and suppliers, ensuring value for money for Imperial College Business School.

Operations and resource management:

  • Triage all incoming requests for support or consultancy from internal stakeholders - Carry out scoping and requirements gathering exercises to inform resource forecasting and allocation.
  • Oversee the financial strategy for the IDEA Lab, including budget planning, resource allocation, and financial forecasting to support strategic initiatives and operational needs.

Essential requirements

  • Finance management experience, including tracking budgets, payments, purchase orders and procurement processes.
  • Contract management and legal administration experience (including contracts, NDAs, MOUs with third parties).
  • Extensive hands-on project management experience.
  • Programme management expertise, with demonstrable experience of overseeing a pipeline of projects.
  • Experience of line managing others and leading the operations of a small team in a relevant area.
  • In-depth knowledge of project management and product development methodologies (including waterfall, Agile, Prince 2).
  • Communication - the ability to communicate clearly and concisely. Able adopt a range of communication styles, tools and techniques appropriate to the audience and the nature of the information.
  • Analytical Thinking – able to simplify complex problems, processes or projects into component parts, explore and evaluate them systematically.
  • Managing relationships - able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of stakeholders, understanding their needs and goals.
  • Flexibility - adapts and works effectively with a variety of situations, individuals or groups.
  • Organisation – is an enthusiastic organiser; consistently drives progress by intuitively judging priorities, identifying risks, pre-empting blockers, and solving problems creatively.

Hybrid working may be considered for this role. Staff working in roles that are suitable for hybrid working will normally be expected to work 60% of their time onsite. The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.
