The role
An exciting opportunity as a Media Officer at the University of Surrey. In this role, you will be primarily responsible for managing media stories for the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences– home of the renowned Surrey Sleep Research Centre, the innovative Surrey School of Veterinary Medicine, and the new School of Medicine. The faculty's research has been a catalyst for debating positive culture change in the NHS, and it is a leader in the use of data and artificial intelligence to improve health outcomes
We are looking for a natural relationship builder and storyteller who can translate complex information into engaging copy, have a strong sense of what will make traditional news outlets take notice and have a gift for shaping stories to suit different digital platforms.
You'll be a natural crafter of stories, tenacious in identifying opportunities to promote the faculty's world-leading research. You'll continue to shape and deliver a strategy to make our academics the go-to source for expert advice and thought leadership.
From time to time, you will also be working to promote some of the University of Surrey's broader strengths – including the employability of our graduates, the innovative nature of our teaching and the economic and societal impact of our research across the board.
In addition to using your experience to deliver great multichannel communications campaigns and coverage, you'll also have the skills and confidence to influence, advise and upskill academic and other colleagues across the University to use the media to achieve their communication objectives.
About you
The successful candidates will have proven experience working in a busy communication, press or digital media environment – ideally with some experience in health or science communications. You'll be organised and be able to demonstrate a track record of cultivating and maintaining relationships with journalists and influencers, as well as with a wide variety of internal stakeholders.
