Energy Systems Catapult is an independent research and technology organisation. Our mission is to accelerate Net Zero energy innovation.

Role Purpose

The Business Model Analyst is responsible for supporting the design, assessment and testing of new business models in the energy sector. The BMI team regularly leads projects that involve facilitating a range of external partners and internal collaborators, for example through stakeholder interview and workshops. We work directly with local areas, private sector, SMEs in our incubation programmes, and with government.

As part of the role our core service is to:

  • Assess new energy markets for opportunities and barriers to innovation
  • Support the design of new concepts that can generate commercial, social and environmental value to the UK
  • Evaluate and advise on new business models based on customer desirability, technical feasibility and commercial viability
  • Develop best strategies to scale a new product or service

Key Deliverables and Objectives

  • Supporting the BMI team with the evaluation of new business models which may include business model design, value chain mapping, proposition reviews, commercial modelling and competitor analysis.
  • Support delivery of business model projects, or contributions to projects, and help ensure they meet targets on time, budget and quality
  • Strong market research and stakeholder management with an ability to work well with internal and external experts when assessing new business models and markets
  • Support on internal business development, including the development of new solutions and propositions, in response to the requests from and needs of other ESC teams
  • Other support to the team on activities such as process improvements, asset development and thought leadership.

Key Work Activities

  • Supporting the BMI team with the design, evaluation and testing of new business models
  • Work with colleagues internally and externally to develop and detail new ideas for business models that will better meet customer needs in different parts of the value chain
  • Develop analysis and insight reports based on market research, on new energy markets and business models that can be utilised in projects and in thought leadership work

What credentials are we ideally looking for?

  • Track record of using initiative and various research methods to identify and solve problems
  • Proven experience of operating in a commercial, analytical or research role
  • Be highly numerate with strong analytical skills – qualitative and quantitative
  • Ability to perform market and commercial analysis
  • Understanding of UK electricity market and relevant commodity markets and the fundamental drivers which shape them
  • Excellent IT skills, including spreadsheet skills Database skills and programming skills are not essential but will be thought of in high regard
  • Understanding of energy policy principles and regulations and issues relevant to the energy transition
  • Genuine commitment to the net zero transition, and/or environmental sustainability
  • Versatile and adaptable in relation to subject matter and working styles (thought leadership to commercial consultancy etc), open-minded, resilient and intellectually creative
  • Ability to structure, engage with and progress solutions to complex, multi-dimensional problems
  • Be a clear communicator, able to explain complex issues to both specialists and non-specialists, in written and verbal form
  • Demonstrated ability and confidence to build positive working relationships with external stakeholders and clients.
  • Good writing and presenting skills, capable of communicating engagingly, confidently with accuracy & clarity with a range of generalist and specialist audiences
  • Be experienced in using the usual suite of office software packages such as Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint
