The Role

Northeastern University London invites applications for an Associate or Full Professor in Computer Science. The appointee will be teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students; provide service to the discipline in line with the evolving needs and aspirations of the Faculty and University; and conduct world-leading research in the area. Appointments will be commensurate with experience and qualifications reflecting a record of demonstrated teaching, service, and research excellence. Applicants seeking appointment to Full Professor must state this expectation on their application and will be assessed according to University criteria for this rank prior to appointment.

Core duties will include development and provision of innovative and inclusive teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; mentoring students and staff; professional service to the University and the wider Northeastern University network commensurate to career stage; and world-leading, high-impact disciplinary and interdisciplinary research. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to shape and manage Northeastern University London’s degrees in Computer Science and contribute to the University’s curricula on the subject.

Candidates will be considered across all areas of Computer Science. We are especially seeking exceptional leaders, whose teaching, service, and research contributes to the advancement of Computer Science as a field. Opportunities for disciplinary and interdisciplinary teaching, research and scholarship abound: the Faculty’s grounding in humanics brings together computing, engineering and natural sciences with humanities based on ground-breaking research and research-oriented teaching practices. Preference may be given to candidates whose research demonstrably contributes to the Faculty’s priority areas (namely, next-generation software, foundations of AI, and human-centred AI).

We particularly encourage applications from those with an interest in innovative teaching, learning and assessment; those with experience of supporting a wide variety of students; and those belonging to groups underrepresented in UK higher education. We are open to appointing on a reduced fraction or job-share basis, subject to our business needs.

About the Faculty

The recently formed Faculty of Computing, Mathematics, Engineering, and Natural Sciences (CoMENS) is undergoing significant growth at Northeastern University London. It is home to four interdisciplinary undergraduate dual-degree (in UK and US) programmes in the areas of Data Science, Data Science and Politics, Computer Science and Business, and Computer Science and Philosophy; four postgraduate programs in the areas of AI Ethics, Data Science, Computer Science, and Technology Leadership; and five degree apprenticeship programmes in the areas of AI, Data Science, Digital and Technology Solutions, and Biosciences.

The Faculty plays a major part in Northeastern University’s first-year student mobility program, offering undergraduate courses in Computer and Data Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Healthcare, striving to inspire and equip entering students to be outstanding scientists.

Person Specification Criteria

Qualifications

For associate professor:

• PhD completed, or equivalent professional experience, in a relevant area.
• FHEA status, or equivalent, achieved or expected.

For full professor:

• PhD completed, or equivalent professional experience, in a relevant area.
• SFHEA status, or equivalent, achieved or expected.

Key Criteria

For associate professor:

• Demonstrates, through evidence, excellent intellectual and practical leadership to be adaptable, innovative, and inclusive in teaching, service, and research.
• Willingness and capacity to undertake academic leadership tasks, including line management and leadership of strategic projects, as well as continuous professional development for such purposes.
• Willingness and capacity to engage and develop working relationships with external partners and with colleagues across diverse disciplines in Northeastern University London and across the Northeastern University global network, as well as undertake continuous professional development for such purposes.
• Ability to conduct internationally recognised, high-impact, externally validated research, with an interdisciplinary network of collaborators including non-academic partners.

For full professor:

• Demonstrates, through evidence, field-defining intellectual and practical leadership to profess their discipline and be adaptable, innovative, and inclusive in teaching, service, and research.
• Ability to undertake academic leadership tasks, including line management and leadership of strategic projects.
• Ability to engage and develop working relationships with external partners and with colleagues across diverse disciplines in Northeastern University London and across the Northeastern University global network.
• A significant volume of internationally recognised, high-impact, externally validated research, with an interdisciplinary network of collaborators including non-academic partners, and including PhD supervision.

For both:

• Willingness and capacity to undertake continuous professional development in relation to institutionally strategic themes, including but not limited to technology, data, sustainability, and ethics.
• Ability to develop excellent educational provision in areas with significant appeal to students, including at postgraduate level, and with a focus on experiential learning.
• Flexibility and capacity to teach across a wide range of courses, where appropriate in collaboration with specialists from other disciplines
• Teaching competency in Computer Science to Levels 4–7 (i.e., all undergraduate and postgraduate levels)
• Excellent written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills including presentation skills, both face-to-face and online
• Excellent IT skills and evidence of supporting the integration of technologies into learning and teaching.
• Excellent time-management and organisational skills
