The Opportunity:

We are seeking someone to act as a remote sensing technician within the NERC Field Spectroscopy Facility. They will assist in the management of the day-to-day operation of the, helping it to meet its goals and tasks, working alongside the Operations Manager and the Equipment Manager. The Field Spectroscopy Facility (FSF) is a NERC funded facility supporting UK environmental scientists with cutting edge techniques and technology. 

  • To help maintain the day-to-day operation of the Facility, involving dealing with users’ enquiries, scheduling equipment loans, the administration of the loan application and review process, packing and dispatch of instrumentation, the checking of instrumentation when returned, and communication with and training of users (25%) 
  • To lead on the processing and delivery of data collected by the facility, including its Unoccupied Aerial Vehicles (UAV) mounted hyper-spectral Headwall sensor. This includes leading the development and maintenance of the data processing workflows (20%).
  • Help to plan and take part in any fieldwork that the facility is involved with. This can involve checking local rules and regulations and driving to transport equipment to and from the field (25%).
  • Assist the equipment manager with the lab-calibration of instruments. This can involve transporting equipment for calibration exercises (10%).
  • To assist with the maintenance, operation and user training on the facility’s fleet of UAVs and the attached remote sensing instruments (15%).
  • To help the facility deliver services to commercial users (10%)

This post is full-time (35 hours per week), however, we are open to considering part-time or flexible working patterns. Note that the job includes fieldwork, which must be in person.

The current funding is fixed until the 31st March 2027, but additional research and commercial funding will be sought (aided by the Operations Technician) to extend the post beyond 2027.

Your skills and attributes for success: 

  • Experience in the use of and processing of data from field spectrometers, UAVs or multispectral satellites with computer software.
  • Understanding of remote sensing and spectrometry in order to work with end users, interpret their needs and provide appropriate training for the equipment supplied.
  • Experience of fieldwork.
  • Experience in the use, flight planning and maintenance of UAVs would be advantageous
  • Experience in developing custom remote sensing processing workflows and using them to perform analysis is very desirable
