The role
The School of Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering is seeking a Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor in Mechanics of Materials. This pivotal role offers the opportunity to drive forward our research and teaching agenda in mechanics of materials, with a specific focus on metallic systems. You will be joining a collaborative and dynamic team within the solid mechanics research group, which is known for its industry-aligned research and contributions to solving real-world problems in materials performance. The School is part of a larger Faculty of Science and Engineering, renowned for its research excellence and commitment to addressing global challenges.
What will you be doing?
As a Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor, you will be responsible for leading internationally recognised research in mechanics of materials, particularly in areas such as high-temperature materials performance, fracture and fatigue mechanics, and the integrity of metallic components. Your research will be expected to contribute to solving significant industrial challenges and align with the activities of the solid mechanics research group. You will also play a key role in teaching, developing and delivering undergraduate and postgraduate courses in materials engineering and structural performance. Additionally, you will supervise student projects, engage in cross-disciplinary collaboration within the Faculty, and contribute to the strategic direction of the School. Opportunities to take on leadership roles will also be available, allowing you to influence the future of the School’s academic and research activities.
You should apply if
You should apply if you have a strong research background in the mechanics of materials, with a proven ability to secure research funding from industry, government bodies, or research councils. Candidates should have a clear and innovative vision for future research that complements and enhances existing activities within the solid mechanics group. A passion for teaching and the ability to develop and deliver engaging, high-quality education in materials engineering and structural performance are essential. We are particularly interested in candidates who have a collaborative approach to research and teaching, with a strong network of industry contacts. A commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within the field is also highly valued. If you are enthusiastic about making a significant impact through both your research and teaching, we encourage you to apply.
