Stipendiary Lectureship in Experimental Psychology

From September 2025 (Fixed-term, two terms)

Lady Margaret Hall (LMH) invites applications for a fixed-term Stipendiary Lectureship in Experimental Psychology. The successful candidate will join a welcoming, supportive academic community and contribute to the vibrant intellectual life of the College.

This teaching-focused post is offered for two terms, from 1 September 2025 to 31 March 2026, to cover the sabbatical leave of Professor Jill O’Reilly, one of LMH’s two Tutorial Fellows in Psychology. It provides an excellent opportunity for early-career academics to gain valuable undergraduate teaching and tutorial experience within the unique Oxford system, and to participate in a thriving academic community.

The Lecturer will be responsible for delivering three hours per week of undergraduate teaching during term time, primarily for students reading Experimental Psychology, Psychology & Philosophy, and Biomedical Sciences. Teaching will include first-year tutorials in Perception and Psychobiology, and potentially second-year tutorials in Cognition or Behavioural Neuroscience, or first-year Statistics, depending on the candidate’s expertise. The post also involves academic support and guidance, including acting as a Personal Tutor, setting and marking collections (termly college exams), writing tutorial reports, and assisting with student admissions in December 2025.

LMH admits around six students per year across Psychology and related joint schools. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with Professor Shelley McKeown Jones and the Senior Tutor, and to engage actively in College life, including access and outreach activities, and social events with students. LMH was founded in 1878 to make Oxford education accessible to women and has maintained a tradition of inclusion and academic excellence ever since. Today, the College supports over 700 students and around 120 academic and 140 support staff. The College is located beside the University Parks, a short walk from the city centre.

The salary will be £8,746–£9,154 (at current 2024/25 rates) for the 3-hour tutorial post. The post is superannuated under the USS pension scheme. The Lecturer will be entitled to Common Table meals (weekday lunch and one dinner per week), and access to the Senior Common Room. A modest research allowance (£183 p.a.) is also available.

Applicants should hold a PhD in Experimental Psychology or a closely related field, and demonstrate the ability to teach effectively in tutorials. An understanding of the needs of high-achieving undergraduates, strong communication skills, and a commitment to student support are essential.
