Balliol College proposes to appoint an Early Career Fellow (ECF) in Classical Languages and Literature. The post is named for a former member of Balliol College, the late James Irvine (Literae Humaniores 1983, DPhil Classics 1987, Junior Research Fellow 1990–93), whose own doctoral thesis was written on Euripides’ Ion; it is enabled by a benefaction from his family. This is a four-year, full-time, fixed-term post available for the period 1 October 2025 to 30 September 2029, the first three terms of which will be probationary.
The area of the post is Classical Languages and Literature, spanning the entirety of the periods covered in the undergraduate syllabus for the Classics degree in Oxford. The post is intended to provide opportunities for an excellent early-career classicist to develop teaching and research skills, and also to gain experience in administrative tasks.
The Tutorial Fellows in Classics at Balliol College are Alexander Bown (Ancient Philosophy), Adrian Kelly (Ancient Greek Literature), Matthew Robinson (Latin Literature), and Rosalind Thomas (Ancient History). For further information, see the college webpage for Balliol Classics and the individual pages of the Classics Faculty website.
